My Door Dash Experience and What I Learned

Four years ago, I was going through debt consolidation and having a hard time. I started Door Dashing to help provide for my family. I know a lot of moms are thinking about using InstaCart or similar companies to make money, so I'll share my experience.

It wasn't easy. Some nights I was excited to Door Dash because it was fun to anticipate "How much can I make?" and "Where will the night take me" but it wasn't exactly how I wanted to spend my Friday and Saturday nights.

Many times I would cry because I was asking myself "God, is this really what you have for me?" but I felt like He was so gently loving me and teaching me lessons along the way which I am grateful for.

I hate letting people down so if someone got the wrong order. They would let me know and I would feel bad, but I didn't do the grocery shopping or make the food, so I got blamed for something I had no control over. Many times, I would be late picking up my kids from sports lessons or practice because I had to take one more Dash to make ten more dollars.

I started asking myself is it really worth it? Many nights I felt stressed because I honestly had to make another $20 to feed my kids and it was a lot of guilt and shame. But you know what? I was doing my best and working hard.

Overall, I learned a lot and was glad for the opportunity, but I'm also glad things are changed since I started running my online business.

Here are 5 things I learned while working Door Dash:

1. Flexibility - There are not many other jobs I could decide when I wanted to work, how long and have the opportunity to go make $100-200 in 5-10 hours. I loved the flexibility to choose my hours, location, which jobs I took and only work when I didn't have my kids, since I'm divorced and had them 50/50.

I told myself I can sit and watch TV and eat ice cream on the couch, or I can go drive around and earn extra income.

2. Fun - It was kind of a game - I was doing door dash, uber eats and grub hub at the same time, so I would sometimes have 5 people's food order in my car and I did my best to deliver on time and see how much I could make in an hour! The best was when orders would show up right by each other or neighbors!

3. Value - I really felt like God was showing me my value and my worth and teaching me that I am worthy of more than $10-20 per hour plus the wear and tear on my car.  I make well over six figures in my full time job, but it was quite humbling to be a pizza delivery person and I am grateful I was able to do this and earn side income, but not have to do it full time forever!

4. Help/Serve Others - I am a #2 on the enneagram so I love to help people. I was grateful to be able to help a single mom with kids at home or an elderly person that wasn't able to grocery shop or go to the store.

5. Tips - I never was really in the service industry, but it really made my heart happy getting a $7 or $10 tip...made me emotional and I felt appreciated. I love to tip well and make people feel appreciated.

Never be ashamed of what you need to do to earn money for your kids. You're a hard-working woman and if your kids knew what you were doing to provide for them, they'd be proud of you. I have some sweet memories Door Dashing and am grateful for every lesson.

Blast from the past: Here's a video I made four years ago when I was Door Dashing.

I made this Side Hustle Comparison video recently so you can see how much money you can make doing various gigs. Dislcaimer: Of course I think the one I do now is the best! I believe in only going up.
