Day 5: Diary of a UGC Mom

If you've been following along, you know I've been curious about UGC (User Generated Content), am doing the Anti-Influencer Method (AIM), and I signed a contract with a company! BUT, I missed one important factor when it comes to working with companies: I'm not good at pretending.
Like, I cannot fake it. I can't pretend to like something. If I really don't use a service or love a product, I can't hype it up. It makes me feel super weird to even try.
This can be a fatal flaw when it comes to influencer marketing, but I realized something: I don't have to fake anything.
From going through the AIM course, I've learned that when it comes to working in UGC, you can go in whatever direction you want as long as you do it well.
I want to have faceless, or mostly faceless accounts and talk about products that I like.
What do I like? BOOKS! Specifically faith-driven, Christian books, or books that help people in some way.
Rather than take any opportunity that falls into my lap, I need to go after companies - publishers & authors- that I've already read and loved OR that I know I would love.
So, if you've been following this journey and thinking, "There's no way I'd be able to convincingly talk about a product I don't care about," you're not alone. It just means that you're going to have to work a little bit harder to work with companies who have products that touch your heart.
The AIM course talks about how to pitch business owners. This module is mainly geared toward people who want to be virtual assistants, social media managers....that kind of work. Megan, the mom behind AIM, talks about how she used to have a client she wrote blog posts for that paid her $20 an hour.

It's also for people who want to make money on UpWork or Fiverr doing various online tasks like proofreading or editing . Yes, you do have to learn how to use these sites. You can't just create an account and walk away. You won't get any clients.
I don't want to be a virtual assistant. But I do want to talk about books that I love and for that, I have to talk to my favorite authors! I have to pitch people.
When you're trying to do something new, it can be easy to think that you have to take any work that comes your way. You don't. Sometimes it's because a client isn't great to work with. Other times, it's because the client is a good fit for you.
The video called "Client Red Flags" is great for sorting this out. I learned that the biggest red flags are expecting you to work for free, talking down to you, and condescending behavior. I've actually experienced all of that in the past! Knowing that it's A-Ok to walk away would have saved me time years ago. I tended to hang on to problem clients for too long and stress myself out.

If I want to work with a specific type of publisher, I have to learn how to pitch clients.

I love this module because it explains what clients are looking for. It explains how to create simple packages (don't make it complicated). Megan has done all of this so she knows what she's talking about.
Another thing I love about this module is that it includes scripts that you can cut and paste to use.
There's an interview checklist before potential client calls, scripts, and so much more to make it easy.
I already have my sights on a specific small mom & pop publisher that I want to work with. I'm niche-ing super down which Megan recommends. Don't try to be all things to all people! Figure out what your specific client needs and how you can be of service.
I genuinely love one type of book. I already have a TikTok account with a few hundred followers that I'm going to start using to talk about the books I love. I've already changed the profile photo and username. My next step is to create a few book videos.
Next week, I'm going to pitch the company I want to work with using all of the things I've used in the module.
I've been a social media manager so I know that part of making money from home means being a go-getter. The AIM method reinforced this. I'm doing things I've never really done before, but feel confident with what I've learned.
I really love this course because not only is the info golden, it's like having BFF cheerleader in your ear who is like, "Go for it! You can do it!" and we all need that. <3
Wish me luck!
