Tips from a Travel Business Mom: The Most Common Travel Lies!

By Victoria Detz, Travel Advisor & Agency Owner at Wishlist Travel Collective

As a travel advisor, I’ve helped SO MANY families create unforgettable vacations over the last 11 years. I've noticed a few common misconceptions that have led to headaches, stress, and missed opportunities. Here is some insider info that will help you plan your next family vacation easily.

Misconception #1: "Booking Direct Always Saves Money"

While booking directly with hotels or airlines might seem like the budget-friendly choice, it often means missing out on valuable perks and protections. Working with a travel advisor typically costs you nothing extra, but provides:

  • Access to exclusive rates and amenities

  • Room upgrades when available

  • Early check-in/late checkout privileges

  • Someone to advocate for you if things go wrong

  • For example, as a Hyatt Privé partner, we secure exclusive perks like resort credits and complimentary breakfast at Hyatt properties which guests can combine with their Hyatt status perks

  • Continuous price monitoring for all vacation types, from Disney to cruises to all-inclusive resorts

It’s our job to maintain direct relationships with resort managers and make sure they know about when you’re arriving and any special celebrations or dietary requirements. This personal connection often leads to extra attention and care during your stay making it that much cozier.

I honestly love actively monitoring prices for every vacation type I book. Whether it's a Disney vacation, a cruise, or an all-inclusive resort stay, travel advisors track rates and adjust when prices drop.

For example, my team recently helped some of our Royal Caribbean clients save between $950-$1,300 per booking when the prices decreased on their upcoming trip. This kind of “in the moment” price watching is something you can’t get from a website. I love my job.

Misconception #2: "I Need to Book a Year in Advance"

Some destinations do require a lot of advance planning (looking at you, Disney!). We very rarely see lower price opportunities for last-minute travelers. Travel is booking earlier than ever, so we always recommend when you’re ready with your deposit and have an idea of what you want in terms of your choice of destinations, room types, etc.

Recommended bookings date ranges:

- Disney World: 7-12 months ahead

- European Summer Travel: 12 months ahead, more if looking at summer travel

- Caribbean All-Inclusives: 3-6 months ahead

- Domestic Hotels: 1-3 months ahead

- Cruises: Book during Black Friday or "wave season" (January-March) for best rates.  Traveling with 2 guests per room, we almost always have group rates lower than you’ll see online!

Note: While you can book with less of a lead time, payment plans, room availability, and flight options may not be available.

Misconception #3: "Travel Protection Is a Waste of Money"

After seeing countless travel disruptions over recent years, I can't stress enough how important proper travel protection is. The right policy can cover:

  • Your trip cancellation or interruption

  • Medical emergencies abroad

  • Lost or delayed baggage

  • Missed connections

  • Work-related cancellations

Misconception #4: "No One Uses Travel Advisors Anymore – I Can Just Book Online"

This common myth overlooks some of the big issues when it comes to booking through third-party websites and wholesale clubs. Here's what many travelers don't realize:

Third-Party Booking Issues

  • Hotels often relocate third-party bookings first when oversold, meaning, you don’t always know where you’re going to end up

  • Many online travel agencies lack direct relationships with properties and can’t get you perks or that caring touch

  • Wholesale club bookings (like Costco) restrict access to cruise perks like Royal Up cabin upgrade programs and other loyalty benefits

  • Limited or no access to resort status matches and upgrades

Crisis Management

When travel problems happen, you don't want to be stuck on hold for hours. Recent examples show why having a travel advisor matters:

  • During airline computer outages, our clients relaxed while we handled rebookings

  • Weather delays? We have direct lines to airlines and hotels

  • Worldwide travel disruptions? We advocate for you while online bookers wait on hold

Our clients often tell us stories of friends spending hours on hold during travel disruptions, while they simply sent us a text and continued their vacation. That's the difference professional support makes.
