I know what you're thinking, "That's crazy. I'll never make that." It's not really about making what she makes, but learning from someone who is obviously killing it.
Video: How I made $563,039 Selling Art With These Sites
By: Mei Pak
Mei's channel is called Creative Hive. In this post I'm giving an overview of her video about how she got started selling art online and turned it into a $560k+ a year venture.
I don't like wild numbers that get people's hopes up, but I found this video suprisingly. ..really great. She's honest, down to earth, and really just good at what she does. If you're an artist, you have to start following her and watching her vidoes.
Her advice is straightforward and based on the experience of someone who has done it and succeeded. She makes more than an average full-time income from home.
The reason so many moms have trouble selling art is because we don't have training. We go for it and just jump in with no knowledge. When it doesn't work, we tweak a few things, but between managing homes and children, the energy often isn't there to keep going when it feels so hard.
That's why I love this video. She explains the difference between using a marketplace site (like Etsy) and your own website. She says a common problem is people trying to use too many platforms and it leads to not being able to focus on one thing at a time.
If you think the marketplace is too saturated or that there's too much competition, watch this video. It's for you.
She covers the following:
-If you're going to sell on your own website make sure it's simple and looks good. It shouldn't be overcomplicated or overwhelming. Yes, you have to learn how to build your own traffic.
-She recommends having your own website because you have more control over the traffic and don't have to deal with Etsy randomly shutting down your store (it happens!).
-She goes over the pros and cons of different website hosts/builders like Shopify, Wix, and Wordpress.
-She talks about the importance of building your own audience so you're not at the mercy of algorithms.
This video helped me feel more confident about starting a store should I want to sell a creative product again like I did in the past. I understand why so many are leaving Etsy now. If you're just starting out or want to test the waters, she thinks Etsy is fine. But if you want to earn a full-time income, you'll want your site.
She also compares and contrasts other marketplace sites like Go Imagine and MakerPlace (owned by Michaels).
I'll be looking out for more of her videos. She knows what she's talking about.
